Everyone at isurus is stoked to announce that Hank Gaskell will be apart of our surf team!

Hank is not one of those pro surfers who chases the lime light, he is a bit of an underground ripper that every knows can tear apart any lineup. A few years ago Hank found himself in a heat at pipeline with none other than the king himself, Mr. Kelly Slater. Hank managed to get a 10 at backdoor but unfortunately couldn’t find a back up wave. But the best part is, he made the the worlds best surfer quite nervous and nearly caused a huge upset. That’s what underground rippers like Hank do, just when you least expect it they get a 10 and baffle everyone on the beach. Hank has also won the prestigious Xcel Pro at Sunset Beach where he beat out surf legends, Pancho Sullivan, Shane Beschen and Myles Padaca. Showing that Hank is a force to be reckoned with.

The guys over at Heated Wetsuits have discovered a deep shelf off Cape Hatteras.  On the underwater ledge itself are the remains of dinosaur like whale bones.  These guys have scoured the remains and found teeth of the Megalodon near the ribcages.  These majestic sharks would come up from the depths and hunt the giant whales during the prehistoric era.

For those of you who are not familiar with the surf scene in the San Francisco area, Ocean Beach is the mecca for surfing. Ocean Beach lies on the outer edge of the city limits, constantly getting batter with relentless swells and harsh winds. It is one of the worlds most challenging, yet best beach breaks in the world.

Just a stone throw away from Ocean Beach is Aqua surf shop. Aqua surf shop is not just a great place to go get a new leash or board when the unforgiving waves at ocean beach snap them in two, but it is a great place to pick up an Isurus Wetsuit to help battle the bitter cold waters of Northern California. Torrey Meister grew up on the big island of Hawaii, so it’s no surprise he is a phenomenal surfer and advanced barrel rider.  He grew up surfing every kind of wave from 2ft to 20ft to become a well rounded surfer.  Barrels, airs you name it, he has the skills.  Now residing in San Diego he is boosting performance levels and becoming a standout throughout Southern California.

Torrey is a great free surfer and surfs because he loves the sport. But he also has a strong competitive side to him that has given him a 3rd place in the prestigious Hawaii Triple Crown of Surfing and more recently a 3rd place in the Bud Light Lime Surf Series thanks to a huge air that earned him a 10 point ride.

We are stoked to have some who is as great of a surfer and loves the sport as much as we do. Keep checking back for updates on Torrey and the rest of the team!

Warmer Barrels, Bikini’s and Blue Skies! Life doesn’t get much better than that. At ISURUS we love the cold, but we’re still down for a little fun in the sun! So we packed up as many suits as we could and headed south to spread the gospel and meet up with some friends along the way. Big ups to Lorenzo Diaz and what he’s doing at the Boardriders Review. Have to thank Anna Santoro for ripping and  being an ambassador for ISURUS warmth down in SD county and Baja.  And our ©boy ( Donny Wilson) who shared a session and some of his art with us. Heres some pics to prove it.

Met Mike 2010 El Nino Winter at Mavericks.  He came into Half Moon Bay with the South African crew.  Mike quickly made a name for himself in the lineup.

HOOLEYWOOD….

 So 2010 came and went and what a year it was. What with the world cup making us all bankcrupt with huge amounts of money being spent primarily on beer, tequila and a seriously magical time. The world cup was also a great time to be surfing here in Cape Town, with just about everyone concentrating on soccer and the bottom of their beer glasses, the waves fired for just about the whole tournament with hardly a soul around.

For HOOLEY, 2010 was also a good year. We managed to get all our operations and behind the scenes stuff taken care of so that we can effectively and proportionately grow our business in 2011.

The Kommetjie Surf Shop has been a great place to showcase some of our product and get things under way and more recently we joined up with Gary Kleynhans and his African Rhythm Surf Shop on the Muizenberg beach front. Gary’s idea of supporting local brands and being the only shop in Cape Town to do so, we feel is a seriously cool vibe. 2010 was a good time for friends.

We managed two successful collaborations this past year; one with Crow Haley www.hooley.co.za/accessories, the old school guru leash maker from Southern California. It’s not always easly dealing with Crow because he doesn’t have a computer or access to the internet(yes he is a yank). We tried to teach him how to send a text so that we could order leashes like that but the old bugger was over it real quick. Nonetheless, his leashes have been very popular so far and have sold well, especially to the guys riding heavier waves, long boards and SUP’s.

Our other successful collaborator’s are the guys from Isurus Wetsuits  http://www.hooley.co.za/wetsuits. We met these guys in Half Moon Bay, San Francisco while we were surfing Mavericks early last year. They are are a start up company just like us and in their bid to take over the wetsuit world have somehow landed up making, we think, the best cold water suits in the world.

Their sizing has taken us a little time to get used to because they are designed with tri-athletes in mind(super toit) and have a good few more sizing points than regular suits but once they are on, they are the lightest, warmest and most comfortable suit you’ll ever wear. The guys that have them, love them.  

With 2011 now well and truly in full swing(and still the SE pomps) we are looking forward to the upcoming swell season(please Neptune) and a challenging but seriously good year ahead.

Go Find It, It’s Out There

Yesterday Isurus folks headed down to score some surf on The West Side of SC.  On the way back up we stopped at a good old friends shop and kicked it with him for a few. Neftali Espino AKA Neff from HomeGrown Surfboards. We threw back a couple cold ones and talked story with him for awhile.

Neff is definitely a very creative and colorful character and has been shaping boards out his Davenport shop for 3 years and serving  up custom shapes in the Santa Cruz area since 1997. Check out his shop and art at Davenport, CA just north of Santa Cruz and right next to the fabulous eats of Whale City Bakery.
