The objective was to design a wetsuit that did not inhibit the natural range of motion of the athlete’s body. The process led us to research tri-athlete wetsuit designs where unrestricted range of motion is critical to fast swim times.
ISURUS consulted with biomechanical experts to engineer proven tri-athlete wetsuit innovations to the special requirements of big wave, coldwater surfing.
By studying how the human musculo-skeletal structure works, the panels were cut to match the natural movement of the human body. Each panel synergistically works with the adjacent panels to provide the maximum free range of motion to be found in a wetsuit.
BILATERAL DESIGN SYMMETRY
The bilateral symmetry design principles engineered into the ISURUS wetsuits balance the symmetrical halves of the body across a median axis so that the panel design does not inhibit the range of motion.
MORE PADDLING POWER, LESS FATIGUE
It is each panel designed working in unison with body that results in a higher elbow position and increased power during the catch phase of the stroke. More power and less wetsuit resistance results in more distance per stroke and reduced muscle output.
Panels Designed for Performance
ROTATION AXIS PANEL
To aid in flexibility and movement, anatomical joints and seams were adjusted to fit to the upper and lower limbs in the natural flexibility zones. This enhances the performance of the Yamamoto neoprene so that the energy can be focused on surfing and not wasted working against restriction.
THORACIC PANEL
The Chest panel is engineered to complement the Underarm and Back Panels which facilitates increased breathing capacity and thoracic expansion. The front panel is engineered with Yamamoto Aerodome, a super durable material with unsurpassed warmth for your core region and comfort while lying on your board.
PIVOT KNEE
To assist in natural movement of the knee, asymmetrical joint adjustments were made to the Lower Leg panel along the Peroneus longus muscle. This enhances the flexibility of the Yamamoto neoprene stretch and elasticity while reducing the stresses on the seams and the neoprene.
HOOD DESIGN
(i-Elite Optional Accessory )
SCS Thermo insulated Yamamoto neoprene. Yamamoto-patented SCS improves the comfort-to-wear ratio and reduces the stress from the suit to the head. It contains a patented SCS membrane coating that makes the material ultra-hydrophobic and wind-resistant while drastically reducing the material thickness. The interior Thermo insulated membrane is applied over the closed cell neoprene and has amazing thermal properties. It is the thinnest, warmest and most comfortable hood available.
BACK POWER OUTPUT PANEL
The Back panel is engineered to interact synergistically with the Underarm panel. It maximizes the output and recovery during paddling, particularly during the catch and recovery phase of the stroke where the arm travels through the greatest range of motion from beside the hip to entering the water in front of your body.
The Back panel also contributes to improved expansion of the thoracic cavity, reducing breathing restrictions on the diaphragm. Improved oxygen flow translates to increased paddling capacity.
LATERAL/UNDERARM
STROKE POWER PANEL
The Underarm panel is a critical panel for maximizing paddling output. The panel dictates the degree of unrestricted shoulder and arm extension, rotation, abduction and adduction. It facilitates the release of the stroke action, enabling for a complete extension along the Latissimus dorsi muscle which enhances the pull phase of the stroke.
ISURUS designed a one-piece panel from the hip to the elbow joint to minimize seams and restriction. No seams means less restriction and points of failure.
